10kTruth.com Web Letter - March 2002

Welcome new sign-ups to 10k Truth's Web Letter and those of you who continue to stick with us! We're sports page junkies, always on the lookout for the pithy quote, but seems to be a dearth of good ones lately. Did see one recently on soccer in America, but failed to clip it before the paper got thrown out. Paraphrased, the reason Americans don't take soccer seriously is because soccer is the playpen sport for children with no talent. Harsh.

Now, back to The Rage and our regular Q&A Feature of the Month -

Q: I am a runner who just moved from Los Angeles. I want to find a running club in Eugene, I was hoping you could help me. Thank you.

A: Rage, here. To be honest with you, I've had limited success with the running club scene, having difficulty fitting in or maintaining any sort of network of people who want to associate with me on a regular basis (e.g. see article on "The Basket Crew" http://www.10ktruth.com/the_rage/rage.htm) let alone run with me. Also, if you've tried a web search, you'll note that Track Town USA is pretty thin on running groups. While this does not produce much in the way of referrals, I do know of some organizations that cater to normal people. You might try www.goodrace.com. They might be able to refer you to some local running groups (formal and informal) and when they meet for workouts. You'll also see a list of local running events, which is a good place to connect with local runners of all different abilities. I also recommend stopping by RunPro in Eugene (located on High St. just east of the 5th Street Public Market). They might have better connections to the local running club scene in Eugene. I also provided a list of popular places to run in Eugene where you might be able to connect with some other folks. Finally, the Oregon Track Club is another good avenue to get connected to local runners. Hope this helps. Good luck. - The Rage

Pat Tyson is who he is, coach of Mead High School in Spokane, who continually cranks out State winning crosscountry teams.

"Number one is just to gain a passion for running. To love the morning, to love the trail, to love the pace on the track. And if some kid gets really good at it, that's cool too." - Pat Tyson

"I tell the kids to have 'wide eyes,' to run light as a feather, to get high on their toes, and to dig deep, dig deep, dig deep! Dwell on the positive, but have controlled, passionate anger." - Pat Tyson

Looking for a Good Track Workout? Try a "4-3-2-1"

For the folks I run with, this is one of our old stand-bys. Basically, you start with four laps, then three, then two and then one, with 200meter recoveries in between. Walking a full lap in between each interval is o.k., too. This workout seems to be a good one for me when I have not been to the track in a while. For me, when I start with 1600 meters it seems to help get me used to running on the track again, which is always a good place to strain a hamstring if you start out with something a bit too spirited. Put some cool, wet weather on top of not being on the track in a while is always an invitation to injury. I hate it when that happens. I believe the 1600 helps warm up the muscles while keeping your stride shorter than if you started out with a hard 400. Too long of a stride on cold hamstrings does not mix. Trust me. When I am gearing up for a race, I like to run the 1600 below 5:30, or about 82 seconds a lap. My 800 split is usually in the low 2:40s on the 1600. Next, it's time for the 1200. I believe my running mates would agree the 1200 is the toughest part of this workout. I try to run sub 4:00, or something between 78 and 79 seconds per lap. Next, it's the 800. I shoot for around 2:35 or so. Finally, on the 400 interval, I try for a sub-70. For me, this workout is a good fitness indicator. If I come away from this one with some decent splits and can jog back to a shower without seeing spots, I feel like I might be able to hold on to a good hard pace come race day. Try it. It might work for you. - The Rage

"Evil people hate the light because it reveals themselves to themselves. ... They will destroy the light, the goodness, the love in order to avoid the pain of self-awareness. ... [E]vil is laziness carried to its ultimate, extraordinary extreme." - Dr. M. Scott Peck, The Road Less Traveled (1978)

"There is a tragic clash between Truth and the world. Pure undistorted Truth burns up the world." - Nikolay Berdyayev

"The dream begins, most of the time, with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you on to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called truth." - Dan Rather
